COVID-19 Child Protection Support for Professionals

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the globe, UNICEF has large concerns about the safety, physical and mental wellbeing of children affected by the school closures and other lockdown measures. Although it seems that children are less at risk of contracting the virus, the direct and indirect consequences of this worldwide pandemic have a huge impact on their present and future safety and well-being. 

As child protection professionals, we know you share our concerns. On this page, UNICEF Netherlands will share and keep updating important information and resources as well as useful tools and advice to help you keep children safe.

1. General Child Protection Guidance during COVID-19 Pandemic

a. The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action produced this Technical Note on Protecting Children during the COVID-19 pandemic, which outlines key risks and corresponding essential actions to mitigate such risks. Here's a summary of this Technical Note. 

The aim of this brief is to support child protection practitioners to better respond to the child protection risks during a COVID-19 pandemic. Part 1 presents the potential child protection risks COVID-19 can pose to children. Part 2 presents programmatic options in line with the 2019 Minimum Standards for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action (CPMS) and the Guidance Note: Protection of Children During Infectious Disease Outbreaks

11. Children on the Move

Refugee and migrant children are at heightened risk for the immediate and secondary impacts of COVID-19. They may be prevented from accessing essential services due to legal, documentation or linguistic barriers.
