The American Fraud: Honduran migrants and the country they flee

Do you want to know about American involvement in Honduras ?
Do you want to know about a country that is responsible for so many problems in another, yet denies it's refugees?
Do you want to know about two young people who travelled with the refugees and documented their dangerous journey across policed borders?

Do you want to know about The American Fraud?

Between 2011 and 2015, Honduras had the highest homicide rate of any country in the world outside of a war zone. At this time, more people were emigrating from San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ industrial capital, than from anywhere else in Central America.

The American Fraud tells the stories of Honduran migrants who have fled their country for a multitude of reasons, ranging from gang violence to government corruption and threats against their families. The film also explores the reasons present in Honduras that have forced these people to abandon their homeland. All of these reasons have their roots in the US-involvement that has been present in the country for decades. Can the US be blamed for the situation that Honduras is in today?

Antonia McGrath and Fionnuala Davidson were working near San Pedro Sula, Honduras when mass protests broke out across the country in May 2015, and they became politically involved after they were added to an undercover phone network in their city. As the complexity of Honduras’ situation began to unravel before them, The American Fraud became a way to tell this story.

Today, murder rates in Honduras remain high, US involvement is ever present, and the migrant caravan is a clear sign that the country’s migration trends have yet to be reversed.
